Scooby-Doo, where are you? Long-time pal and hungry sidekick Shaggy has asked that very question more times than we could count, but kids across America needn't think about the answer. Since the cartoon series rose to popularity in the early 70s, Scooby-Doo has been just about everywhere. The iconic character has in the 35 years since his inception appeared in nearly 20 different cartoon revivals spanning some 320-plus episodes. And due in part to a hit live-action movie and in large to the dedication of both kids and adults alike, Scooby doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

Except, that is, to the latest videogame platforms. Publisher has throughout this generation worked with studios to bring new iterations of Scooby-based videogames to consoles and while these efforts have mostly met with mixed critical results, kids continue to lap them up all the same., from THQ and developer A2M (Scooby-Doo: Mystery Mayhem), is the latest romp into the cowardice dog's frightening and comical universe. The title is the most ambitious of any Scooby game to date, attempting to blend the style and humor of the franchise with traditional platform mechanics, and in some ways it is a success. However, despite notable improvements to control and presentation, some clunky operations remain, and repetition runs amok. A simplistic, yet fitting storyline moves the action forward.
It isn't long before players jump into the adventure and learn of the gang's latest mystery. Evidently Fred's cousin, Jed, works in the special effects business and his factory has gone haywire just as he's gone missing.
It's up to Scooby and friends to figure out why spooky robots are running freely through the place and likewise solve the mystery of what happened to Jed, whose absence has led some to believe that he's behind the madness. The story is unraveled through in-game cut-scenes, which get the job done, and A2M has contracted considerable celebrity voice talent to bring the characters to life. Gamers will instantly recognize Adam West's well-known voice as one of the personalities, for instance.
In this way, Unmasked much more effectively captures the atmosphere of the cartoons than previous Scooby-based videogames. Unmasked serves up a very conventional, straightforward platforming experience, for the most part, which is good and bad.
Kids will undoubtedly be able to quickly familiarize themselves with the controls. Scooby is tightly moved around a mixture of open and controlled environments, is able to spin-attack enemies, jump and double jump, and belly-flop. Gamers navigate platform-heavy locales while breaking open crates to gain Scooby Snacks and a weird substance called mubber, which later enables the character to take on new suits and abilities. And through all of this, the unwitting dog hero must fight off groups of enemies. Most of these elements work, with the occasionally frustrating hiccup. As a result, Scooby-Doo! Unmasked is oftentimes a fun, if shallow platformer.
The Verdict is the best videogame adaptation of the famous cartoon series yet, but it's far from perfect. The title doesn't bring much new to the table.
Its fundamentally basic platforming mechanics have all been done before - and better, and its occasional mechanical oversights may prove troublesome for its target audience. That noted, simplistic or not, moving Scooby about the environments and platforming is still fun enough and the title's unique costume element definitely breaks up the monotony. Add in the fact that A2M has mostly nailed the style and humor of the cartoon series and we think that most die-hard Scooby fans will be pleased with the end experience, even if it is shallow. But there's still room for improvement.
7.5 Presentation Solid use of license. All the characters are featured, but only Scooby is playable. Strong list of enemy types and environments. 7 Graphics Quasi-cel-shaded look captures the look of the cartoons, but the visuals are washed-out. 7 Sound Fitting.
Celebrities such as Adam West provide humorous voice work, but the music is not always spot on. 7 Gameplay Usually fun despite some flaws. Tight control and enjoyable platforming. Some clunky challenges.
5 Lasting Appeal Not a long or especially challenging game, but will likely satisfy most younger players.
